WTF is a Buccal?

I know you’ve been seeing all the media buzz about buccal fat removal because I have! If you’re unfamiliar with beautification surgeries like I am, I’m sure you probably had the same reaction I did (which was “WTF is a buccal and why is this so popular?”). So, I did the research so you don’t have to!

According to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, buccal fat removal is a procedure that removes the buccal fat pad, a naturally-occurring pad of fat in the cheek hollow area. So, why in the world would people be removing something that is naturally occurring? Well, it all comes down to the fact that indie sleaze is popular again. Known by its more popular name “heroin chic”, indie-sleaze basically means looking emaciated with a fun, little addition of intense eyeliner. The cherry on top of the indie-sleaze style is the 90s/00s inspired fashion trends which bring into light the waifishly thin models of the time (I’m looking at you, Kate Moss).

What does this have to do with buccal fat removal? Well, as indie-sleaze becomes more mainstream, our fave celebs will do anything to achieve this look. Even if it means going under the knife, popular celebs and influencers have to keep up with trends to stay relevant! Look at Kim K, with her sudden weight loss and removal of her (many) implants, she’s starting to truly fit the indie-sleaze image that’s so trendy right now. The problem here lies in the fact that young girls will use this as a template for themselves. So while celebs can go get a quick and easy fat removal procedure, young girls will starve themselves to reach something literally unachievable without body-altering procedures.

But, for those still curious, here’s what will most likely happen if you opt to follow the trend and proceed with a buccal fat removal surgery. It’s not as intense as I originally thought, but having my cheeks cut open and then being on a liquid diet for 2 days does not sound like fun to me. As this is a permanent surgery, it’s probably not the best idea to follow the trend and spend money on something that will probably go out of style in a month. I may not have had the surgery myself, but here’s what I do know: trends are not forever, but surgery is.

Social media is the perfect breeding ground for young girls (and boys) to develop insecurities. There’s a new trend every day and trying to keep up with it would drive anyone mad with obsession. At the end of the day, it’s all fake. And honestly, your chubby cheeks are way cuter than looking like a hollow skeleton, embrace them!
